How to apply as a volunteer?
What is a Volunteer?
Volunteers are people who work for a community or for the benefit of environment primarily because they choose to do so. They give their time freely and with no expectation of monetary reward. Their hours of service ensure that many activities are accomplished and many people are helped. They represent every walk of life –professional, homemaker, student, retiree – as well as every age and cultural group.
Volunteers are an important human resource for any volunteer organization. They bring a passion for the cause and a commitment to the purpose, and are highly motivated by their choice of involvement. They take responsibility for shaping their communities.
For many, volunteering is a way of life. Whether taking part consists of a few hours after work, an entire day, or months or years at a time, volunteering fulfills a need to give back.
Why are Volunteers Needed at the Parkinson Society?
Parkinson Society Central & Northern Ontario’s purpose is to ease the burden and find a cure through education, advocacy and support services.
There are approximately 100,000 Canadians who live with Parkinson’s. Many thousands more, including families and loved ones, are impacted by the devastating effects of this disease. While researchers continue to develop improved treatment and therapies, key questions remain unanswered – most specifically, questions about cause and cure.
The social cost and economic burden – on individuals and on society – is enormous.
Parkinson’s disease is severely debilitating and forces unplanned, early retirement because there’s no way to halt its progression.
The population that is over 65 years of age is expected to increase dramatically over the next decade—in Canada from 13% in 2006 to 23.5% in 2016. As this population increases, the number of families living with Parkinson’s increases (source: Statistics Canada),
