Can your nose tell the difference between gasoline and bubble gum, lemon juice and fish? If not, your loss of smell may be an early warning sign of some kind of neurological disease, Parkinson’s included.

The chronic, degenerative brain disorder, described by Britain’s Dr. James Parkinson in 1817, affects more than 100,000 Canadians and is expected to rise in incidence over the next 30 years from 11.6% to 23.6%.

It’s estimated that world-wide five million people live with Parkinson’s – including high profile stars such as actor Michael J. Fox and boxer Mohammed Ali. In people with Parkinson’s, the brain cells that normally produce a chemical called dopamine stop functioning, resulting in symptoms that affect a person’s quality of life and overall health.

Those symptoms may include involuntary trembling, stiff and rigid muscles, stooped posture, or a change in facial expression (such as an absence of blinking) sometimes referred to as the Parkinson’s stare.

For over a century, neurologists have relied on these changes in the motor system as a way of diagnosing the disease. But now, many are convinced that there are non-motor symptoms (some of which were previously dismissed) that play a significant role in the disease’s development.
